(Educator in the Workplace/Career & College Readiness)

9:00 AM - 11:00 AM: Site visits to explore and learn skills needed for college and career readiness

Option 1: Carnegie Mellon University - CMU provides a number of services to help students to achieve success. During this session you’ll learn about two different groups and gain some ideas about helping students prepare for the transition to postsecondary programs. You'll visit the Global Communications Center (https://www.cmu.edu/gcc/index.html) and the Academic Development department (https://www.cmu.edu/acadev/). PLEASE NOTE: Parking is a premium at CMU. CMU has graciously reserved and offered to pay for 10 parking spaces in one garage.
Option 2: Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics - http://pia.edu/ 5 Allegheny County Airport, West Mifflin PA 15122. Brief presentation about PIA and the aviation industry followed by a tour of the campus where you will be able to observe PIA’s instruction in the skilled trades. PIA Field Trip Slideshow
Option 3: LUMA Institute/Industrious - https://www.luma-institute.com/ One PPG Place, Suite 3100 (31st Floor), Pittsburgh, PA 15222. This visit will give you the opportunity to get oriented to LUMA Institute, a company dedicated to helping individuals, teams and organizations become more innovative—which includes current and future employees. LUMA operates out of a co-working space called Industrious; we are working on the possibility of the folks who operate Industrious to discuss their business model. That would be relevant because their co-working space and services are used by a large number of small companies. PLEASE NOTE: There are several paid parking garages within walking distance of PPG Place; be prepared to pay for parking if you choose this option.
Option 4: New Century Careers - https://www.ncsquared.com/ 305 East Carson Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219 (Terminal Buildings). New Century Careers is a Southwestern Pennsylvania workforce development organization with a dual client mission to support pre-employment and incumbent manufacturing workers as well as their current or future employers to help each set of clients advance economically through continuous workforce education and training. In this visit, you will learn about skills and career options in the manufacturing industry as well as tour New Century Careers' facility.
PLEASE NOTE: There are on-street parking kiosks for many streets in the South Side; be prepared to pay for parking if you choose this option.
